Fascinate Your Audience

At different events, we often get stuck at the end of the table with people we barely know for over 2 hours! These situations apply to certain family events, business dinners, and celebrations of all kinds, and it causes us to say, “Oh no, another dinner event – you know I hate these things.” Actually, these events can be Opportunity knocking and this is our chance to shine.

Even for our extroverted side, events to support a family member can be hard when we don’t know anybody. We aren’t going to be the “life” of the party – verbally or visually. And to be curious about others helps shape conversations and bring a unique perspective, creating a comfortable environment. That’s positive leadership.

Try these questions as conversation starters for the next event you attend. They can even be used as icebreakers to kick-off a meeting. You will quickly become the favored guest!

  • In grade school, what was in your lunch? Was it a packed lunch or was it bought
  • What are your favorite and worst 2 hours of the week?
  • If you could only read a single page of the newspaper, which one would you read and why?
  • What celebrity are you told you look like?
  • What is something you learned about yourself in the last 30 days?
  • If you could be famous – what would you be doing?
  • What actor or actress will you go to see, just because they are in that movie?
  • What actor/actress do you dislike most, and why?
  • If you could only watch one TV show per week which one would it be?
  • Where were you on 9 / 11?
  • What’s the one food that could disappear tomorrow and you wouldn’t miss it a bit?
  • What’s the first car you owned?
  • What celebrity living today would you like to meet?
  • What karaoke song would you sing in public?
  • What’s your favorite mixed drink?
  • Who was your favorite teacher growing up? Why?
  • What article of clothing does your spouse/partner/roommate, tell you to get rid of but you love it?
  • What is your worst subject in school?
  • What’s the magic and silly trick you might perform in public? Or your stupid human trick?
  • Are you a pack rat or throw-awayer? What do you collect? What’s the most valuable thing you have thrown away?
  • What is your favorite sound ?  
  • What is your favorite smell?
  • What was your very first paying job?
  • What superhero trait would you most like to have?
  • Describe yourself in one word.
  • What are you good at now that you weren’t good at 10 years ago?
  • What’s your favorite amusement park ride?
  • What’s the amusement park ride you will never ride, or never ride again?
  • For what event, thing, or celebrity would you stand in line for all night?
  • What was your neighborhood like growing up?
  • What would change about your wedding if you could?
  • When did you experience peer pressure as a child?
  • What invention do you love now, that your parents didn’t have?
  • What experience did you have growing up, that you would like to share with your kids?
  • What’s the most mischievous thing you did as a child?
  • If you won a gold medal in the winter Olympics – what would you be doing?
  • If you could have more patience in one aspect of your life, what would it be?
  • If you had the courage to overcome your greatest fear, what would you be doing?
  • What’s the most selfish thing you do on a regular basis?
  • What adjective would your parents use to describe you as a child?
  • If you could have a free service in your home every week, what would that be? What chore do you hate most?
  • What was your first rock concert?
  • Name a tradition that is important to you?
  • When you say – “I had a great day” – what happened to make that a great day for you?

  • What’s your favorite cereal?
  • The source from which you love to receive your daily news?
  • What was your favorite game as a kid?
  • Which childhood friend would you love to reconnect with?
